Beredo Oak woods

Pitões das Junias, Montalegre

On the slopes of the Beredo valley is to be found one of the best preserved autochthonous oak woods in the National Park. In this the Beredo Oak Wood the Pyrenean oak predominates, being better adapted to higher altitudes, in association with many other species, as is typical of this type of woodland. This type of tree cover is home to a huge diversity of wildlife species and thus constituting a habitat of high ecological importance. Here several faunal species of the National Park can be found such as deer, marten, badger and birds such as the goshawk and great spotted woodpecker, among others. It is quite common to find signs of the presence of wolves such as faeces containing hair and footprints.

From the footpath that crosses the Beredo Valley we can have an excellent view over to the Gerês mountains, picking out individual peaks, as well as to the white coloured Chapel of St. João da Fraga, already at the limit of Pitões das Júnias.
