Campesinho stream

Pitões das Junias, Montalegre

We cross Campesinho stream on an old wooden bridge, built by the National Park service. Further up, from the viewpoint, we have the opportunity to overlook Pitões waterfall with a height of about 30 metres, a feature caused by the fracturing and dropping away of the terrain.

On the right bank of the Campesinho stream are located the ruins of a Benedictine monastery built in the mid-19th century, this is the Monastery of Santa Maria das Júnias. Of this small convent the walls of the main divisions and some cloister arcades remain. The church, with its single nave and wooden roof, also retains an interesting Romanesque side portal and a six-century altarpiece in the main chapel. In addition to its architectural, historical and religious value, what most impresses visitors to the Monastery is its setting and the surrounding landscape.
