Moinho do Canto and Rio Meão

Pitões das Junias, Montalegre

Canto Mill, the memory of whose construction is long lost in time, has been preserved although it is no longer operational. It is built in granite, small in size and with a mill race that channeled the water of the River Meão to drive the machinery. In the area around the River Meão there are many lameiros (water-meadows) bounded by stone walls and sometimes also by strands of oak and birch trees which are also present in hilltop woods and interspersed with cultivated areas. This agroforestry patchwork is the dominant feature of this Barroso Region and in terms of nature conservation forms a habitat that has significant biological diversity.
