Patchwork of Water-meadows (Lameiros)

Pitões das Junias, Montalegre

From this point we get an idea of the grazing areas of the Mourela Plateau which are essential for sustaining the main economic activity of the local people. These meadows, or more precisely water-meadows because they are permanently irrigated to protect them from frost and drought, are usually found in a mixed patchwork of broadleaf woodlands and scrub, creating a habitat complex which is beneficial to the conservation of various faunal species found in the National Park.
