Tor (stacked granite blocks)

Pitões das Junias, Montalegre

The column of stacked granite blocks that we see at this point is what geologists call a tor. This is an excellent example of this type of geological formations that can also be found elsewhere in the region. It results from the action of different agents such as water, wind, chemical processes and temperature variations. This particular example has a peculiarity in that it exhibits signs of attempted destruction motivated by popular beliefs, probably associated with Celtic mythology.
