Agroforestry mosaic

Soajo, Arcos de Valdevez

Along the old track we find areas with small agricultural fields, arranged in terraces and which make use of the best alluvial soils formed by erosion and river deposition. They are farmed meadows, usually contiguous or close to a nucleus of dwellings and where subsistence agriculture persists. Seasonal crops are intended to meet the needs of families as well as feeding the animals. These small cultivated plots adjoin wooded areas whose resources have also been used traditionally over the generations.

Within this agroforestry mosaic there stands out a network of innumerable paths, usually flanked by stone walls, that give access to the fields and settlements.
