Portela do Lagarto pavement forms part of the ancient track that connects Lamas de Mouro (in the municipality of Melgaço) to Peneda (in the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez). In times gone by it was probably an important throughway and link between settlements, as well as one of the most commonly used routes by the devotees of Our Lady of Peneda. Its construction is lost in the mists of time, although some of the original surface, made of rough granite slabs, still exists.
