Ramisqueira swamp

Castro Laboreiro, Melgaço

Ramisqueira swamp is a small reservoir that makes use of the adjacent topography to store rainwater and surface water. This dam also provides important help in fire-fighting by providing a source of water for firefighting helicopters.

Being already in an area with a great diversity including areas of scrub, woodland and pine woods, in addition to creating in itself an aquatic habitat, Ramisqueira swamp is linked with significant biological diversity. Characteristic species of an aquatic environment, such as the dipper, grass snakes and various species of amphibians, but also species associated with woodland habitats, such as the green woodpecker or thrush and in scrub such as warblers, can be seen here. Some of the small carnivorous mammals, such as the weasel, or birds of prey, who take advantage of the variety of habitats here can also be seen since they are species that find shelter and feed on a variety of methods and food types.
