Another nice Barroso village of the upper Cávado. Preserved in the village is a more authentic and certainly older central area which is of great cultural and architectural value, including granite paved streets and several well-preserved old buildings such as the communal oven. In the village there is also the house of Bento Gonçalves, the first secretary general of the Portuguese Communist Party who eventually died in Tarrafal.
Once again outstanding is the stunning landscape! More than 800 meters above sea level, completely surrounded by green fields and water-meadows, Fiães do Rio exemplifies a rural centre focused on agriculture but which is also beginning to wake up to tourism as it becomes increasingly accustomed to outside visitors coming to enjoy the scenery.
It is also notable for its diverse landscape created by the patches of autochthonous oak woods, the water-meadows and cultivated field patchwork. Associated with this patchwork of habitats exists a high diversity of fauna, with some rare and threatened species being present.
