Fojo de Xertelo is a well-preserved example of an ancient wolf trap. This animal, now protected, was for centuries the object of persecution motivated by a fear that was instilled in the minds of the mountain people through its association with the hereafter and also because of the attacks it made on their animals that grazed in the mountains. These structures, which are today classified as a cultural heritage, are found only in the North of the Iberian Peninsula.
For local communities the wolf traps are seen as a symbol of their history and culture and the struggles waged between man and wolf.
