This is an excellent spot from which to appreciate the contrasts of the river Homem. Looking in the direction of its source at the top of the Serra do Gerês we can see the tightly fitting line of the upper section of the river restricted between rocky slopes, having already passed through a section featuring glacial characteristics. Upstream of the dam itself a highlight is the mirror provided by the waters of the Vilarinho da Furna reservoir which themselves conceal the drowned communal village. Downstream of the dam the river flows once again on its natural course along a typical V-profile valley.
