Pincães River (Pincães Waterfall)

Cabril, Montalegre

The Pincães River flows here in a relatively deep gorge down to the Cávado River, plunging abruptly over the edge of the granite, forming the Pincães waterfall. Put simply waterfalls are geomorphological features created where a watercourse is interrupted by a sharp gradient, which in turn is caused by variations in the hardness of the predominant rock (geological discontinuities), in this case granite. In addition to lithology and tectonics, waterfalls also depend on current climatic conditions with higher levels of precipitation encouraging scouring and water flow.

Pincães waterfall should be reached by following the path that leads from the village, taking due care to avoid slipping or falls. It is one of the most beautiful and one of the most visited waterfalls to be found in the Peneda-Gerês national park. The water cascades from a height of about 20 meters, feeding a small lagoon of translucent water which invites spending time in contemplation, relaxation and photography.
