Pomba River

Gavieira, Arcos de Valdevez

The river Pomba or Rio da Veiga, rises in the Serra da Peneda, two kilometers northeast of Branda da Bouça dos Homens at an altitude of about 1240 meters, and flows into the Peneda river just over 100 meters from our current location.

The Pomba river valley provides the dividing line between the hills of the Peneda uplands from the Serra do Soajo.

In the summer months the water flow can decrease dramatically but during winter the river can carry huge volumes of water creating strong currents.

The valley of the Pomba river has a ‘U’ formed cross section, evidence of ancient glacial action and the important climatic changes that have occurred in the past.
