Portela de Pitões marks the border between the Peneda-Gerês National Park (Portugal) and the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés Natural Park in Galicia (Spain). The border between the two countries is marked here by boundary stone 67.
The place offers a huge field of view, both of the plateau and of some of the peaks of the Gerês mountains, where the mountain goat finds refuge. Nearby this spot can also be seen a classified historical monument, a megalithic tumulus (ancient burial monument).
A reference should also be made to the stories of smuggling and the "hop over" crossings from Portugal to Spain (illegal immigration) that were always part of the lives of frontier peoples, especially along non-river stretches of the border.
From this Portela, the Peneda-Gerês route enters an international section along about 5 km until re-entering Portuguese soil.
