Castro Laboreiro, Melgaço

Castro Laboreiro, the local village, is the main population centre in the parish and one of the largest (in area, population and services) of the Peneda-Gerês National Park.

Within the definitions of the settlement systems of this region, Castro Laboreiro is classified as a "permanent settlement” that is, where the population resides throughout the year, without the need to transfer to brandas or invererais.

The village has a remarkable historical and architectural heritage, a highlight being the ruins Castro Laboreiro castle (a National Monument) and the typical local houses. In the center of the village the buildings of the old Town Hall and the old Judicial court are preserved, as well as the Castro Laboreiro pillory. It is also worth mentioning the Parish church, built originally in the 12TH century in Romanesque style.

A visit to the Castro Laboreiro museum is recommended, dedicated to history and local traditions, it explains aspects of the landscape and settlement, highlighting the theme of brandas and inverneiras. Also emphasized is a display related to the theme of the Neolithic, with reference to the important megalithic necropolises on the Castro Laboreiro plateau, which includes some 90 megalithic monuments. Next to the Museum Centre and also deserving a visit is Casa Castreja, a typical construction that depicts the environment of a local house in the second half of the 20th century.
