The Village of Gerês or Caldas do Gerês has a long tradition as a thermal resort. Some researchers even believe that the warm waters of Gerês would have already been harnessed by the Romans, who passed with some frequency along the Geira, the Roman road that is very close to the spa.
As documented certainties, it is known that Gerês has been known to Portuguese since the 13th century and that the first who allowed the therapeutic use of thermal waters date back to the reign of D. João V in 1735, and who ordered the construction of pools for bathing, chapels and other support buildings.
It is also documented that Caldas do Gerês, as a village with permanent residents, was only constituted in the second half of the 19th century, although there were already houses for the reception stay of the regulars (visiting the spa), which were abandoned as soon as the first cold weather came in October.
Since then, the village has experienced rapid growth, always anchored onto its endogenous resources: water, forest and the inescapable beauty of the Gerês mountain range. Today it is a well-known tourist centre, sought after by many Portuguese and foreigners.
