This stage is between Outeiro and Pitões das Júnias covering about 11 km between these two Barroso villages. The whole route is along paths and country tracks, passing through the Beredo valley and its extensive oak woods and having as a backdrop the Gerês mountains. There are no support services between these two villages. Stock up with provisions before you set off.

Take care to look out for the waymarks and signposts for the GR50 as there are several intersections and branches along this stage, as well as other marked routes. The signposts relating to the GR50 are clearly identified and, along this stage, are numbered from 18.1 to 18.25 (a numbered plate attached to signposts, the supporting post of information panels or direction mark). Always follow the GR50 waymarks and signs that indicate the direction of ‘Pitões das Junias’

We start the walk in the beautiful village of Outeiro, set in a landscape of rare beauty, remarkable for the extensive mirror of water of the Paradela reservoir and the green of water-meadows. We walk down through the middle of the village, where we can see the oldest buildings and examples of communal rural heritage such as the communal threshing floor, fountains, the washing tank and the water font. We pass Rua das Lajes and leave the village along the cobbled track that leads us to the bottom of the valley where we will cross the (smaller) bridge over the River Meão, alongside Moinho (mill) do Canto. We remain on the track that passes through the beautiful patchwork of water-meadows and cultivated fields. A little further ahead, we pass a new bridge and the last water-meadows of Outeiro. We then follow a rougher path along the slopes of the left bank of the Beredo stream, which will take us to the limits of Pitões das Júnias. The route passes through the bucolic Beredo oak wood, then passing Portela da Fairra where we have the opportunity to see a beautiful example a bear defence and a goat baited wolf trap.

After passing the Portela da Fairra wolf trap we resume in a northerly direction continuing along slopes on the left bank of the Beredo, entering a denser area of oak wood. Further on, dropping downhill slightly, we cross over the Campesinho brook on a small wooden bridge and then start climbing through woodland towards Pitões das Júnias. Shortly after the route joins the walkway for the Pitões das Júnias waterfall viewpoint from where we can look over this famous waterfall. We continue to climb up the walkway until we reach the granite paved path that leads us to Pitões das Júnias.

We enter the village through the farmed fields where one of the most beautiful photo opportunities of the National Park awaits us! The scenery is indeed unique with the patchwork of cultivated fields spread around the village and in the background the peaks of the Gerês mountains. Upon entering the village the route leads us over to the old primary school, an excellent viewpoint from where we can enjoy looking over the Beredo valley and the Paradela reservoir, exactly the route we have just been following. We can now calmly visit the village and enjoy its tranquility but not failing to try the typical local gastronomy. The Barroso Ecomuseum nucleus provides additional information.
